Wolf Blessed

Introduction

Wolf Blessed are people that can shift into wolves. At a higher understanding they can also half-shift, becoming humanoid fanged and clawed creatures. They exist only on Vilkas, and only because their god, the Wolf god Privus, bestowed this gift upon them to help them expel invaders from their land. Now, over 200 years later, the live in secret, hunted for the feral beasts they partially turned out to be.

History

The Wolf Blessed came into existence when invaders came to take their island. The Visitors did not even attempt to negotiate and instead used their overwhelming power to simply take land. They came with weapons of steel, something the island dwellers did not have as steel had always just been used for tools. They also came with Elementalists - magick users who could control the elements. Against these greater odds the people were no more than an annoyance to the visitors.

In the midst of what would have been the final battle over the Capital of the island, a giant wolf appeared on the mountain tops, howling a powerful song. This song filtered down onto certain people, and from it they gained the power to shift forms. Additionally, they had an increased strength and speed, their senses were heightened, and they could heal quickly from their injuries.

With these new abilities, the Wolf Blessed were able to push the Visitors off the island and back to their ships. For a while they were praised for their extraordinary abilities, but as with all things different soon others began to grow jealous and fearful. The Wolf Blessed hadn't just changed and that was it, no they had also become partially feral like the beasts residing within them. After only a few generations, the Wolf Blessed started going into hiding. After some began taking from farmers livestock, the King decided they had become to feral and needed to be hunted down. Wolf Blessed Hunters were born, and before long, the Wolf Blessed went separate ways as the Great Hunt began.

City Dwelling Wolf Blessed

Life began anew for the Wolf Blessed as some remained in the cities and town, going to where they weren't known to begin a life of hiding. Over time these city dwellers became part of their local communities. That isn't to say they were safe. During the Great Hunt and even after, city dwelling Wolf Blessed were found out and slain before being carted in for a bounty.

As time passed they learned more and more how to act normal, and to properly sneak out for a run in their wolf form before the anger could take over. Now, over 200 years later, they are littered everywhere. In positions of power, on the streets, in the guard, just your average normal person, living out their normal life.

Forest Dwelling Wolf Blessed

While about half of the Wolf Blessed stayed in the cities, the other half took to the forests to let their feral side run free. These were the main prey of the hunters, who tracked and killed them using silver, ostensibly because they were stealing from poor farmers and killing innocents. This only led the packs deeper into the forests and before long they became hard to find.

While the island dwellers may have thought them gone, the forest Wolf Blessed lived on and grew to large families and packs, hunting in the forest for their food, gathering from plants, making clothing out of furs and fibers. Decades past and the forest dwellers learned to live off the land. The language shifted slightly from what the city dwellers spoke, to something far more lazy. Much of their communication was through body language and hand signs. It wasn't unheard of for there to be no talking at all for days at a time.

Now, 200 years later, the forest dwellers have become one with nature. They have made 'homes' within the forest itself and live out their lives in general peace. Of course, they haven't abandoned their feral ways either, which leads to fights and death amongst the packs, but mostly things are calm and orderly, as nature demands. From time to time younger forest dwellers will return to the cities, seeking a different life. It's not easy, and most get caught, but the wilderness isn't for everyone, not even the Wolf Blessed.

Playing a Wolf Blessed

There are two different types of Wolf Blessed available to be played. The city dwelling Wolf Blessed are far more prevailant only because they fit in with the commoner's and are less likely to be found out and turned in for a bounty. Forest dwellers who make the change to go into a city either need a great story as to why they are so different, or they need to mimic their city dwelling brothers to the best of their ability and hope they aren't caught.

Wolf Blessed have the ability to shift into a large wolf. The wolf varies in size from around three feet to around seven, depending on age and the magick level of the person. They also have the ability to half-shift, sprouting claws and fangs but remaining on two feet. The strength is the same in all forms, making many stronger than they look. The strength and speed/agility also increases with magick level, up to nearly five times that of a strong human for strength and four times for agility.

The Wolf Blessed are able to heal supernaturally fast from almost any damage that isn't immediately life ending. Broken bones and stab wounds can heal in less than a minute seconds. Superficial wounds can heal in mere seconds.

These gifts come with some glaring weaknesses. Silver injuries take much longer to heal from, and a stab wound with silver can easily kill a Wolf Blessed. Silver can also burn just by touching the skin, and with persistent pressure it can slowly burn through a Wolf Blessed. Wolfsbane can shock to the touch. More importantly ground wolfsbane or silver dust separately laid a line on the ground forms a barrier only high levels Wolf Blessed can get through, and only with great effort and pain. Mixed together and laid out, it's nearly impossible to bypass. If either are inhaled, it causes pain and disorients the Wolf Blessed, making it difficult to focus and act.
